Cost of Living in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia's thriving economy and recognized status as a newly industrialized country allows its populations to enjoy one of the most competitive living costs in the world. Recently, the Federal government had drawn a new economic model that will be implemented in conjunction with the 10th Malaysian Plan. The Government has allocated RM 230bil for development expenditure, the allocation comprises 55% for the economic sector, 30% for the social sector, 10% for the security sector and 5% for general administration. In 10th plan, the government decided to increase sales tax from 5% to 6%. The petrol fee has increased from RM 1.10 per liter ( looking back at Anwar's day from 1990 to 1998 as the Ministry of Finance) to RM 2.40 per liter which means the fuel price has 218% increase within 13 years. September 2009, RON 95 has been introduced to replace( or perhaps, to upgrade) RON 92. According to Datuk Zain Mohd Dom( Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumer Affairs Ministry secretary-general Malaysia), consumers have been using RON 97 which is too powerful for cars today. "Took a look at car manuals and one will often find that RON 95 is recommended, RON 97 had stronger ingredients that were more suitable for higher powered cars."

As a consumer, i do not see any differences or benefits when i change to RON 95 from RON 97. The price is almost the same compare to the price of RON 97 2 years ago.The price of RON 95 has been increased from RM 1.75 to RM 1.90 per liter recently, the Government is subsidising 33.81 sen per litre, which comes up to about RM 340 mil monthly.  The price of the fuel has been rapidly increase and drop in this few months. The only negative comment about RON 95 i heard from others and i do realize that is that "They burn fast".  The public transport is very inadequate for a normal living and owning a car is a must. The cost of ownership of car is very high and it could be among the worst place to won a car. Petrol costs RM 1.90 per liter and most of the roads are toll roads. It will cost easily around RM 150 for a average home to school/shopping in a month. The government tells us that, the price is already cheap compared to other nations! what the?! did you forget to multiply the cost-of-living?(for more info, please view nokrahhitam)

Perhaps, driving a motorcycle isn't a bad idea. Nevertheless, everyone knows that in a crash motorcycle riders usually come off worse than car drivers. Its common an accident that involve a car can put a motorcyclist in hospital. I used to ride motorcycle when i was in high school, after seeing the dangers of riding motorcycle in Kuala Lumpur, so many motorcycle accidents in high way and even in neighborhood which cause the motorcyclist suffering a fractured body part(s) and numerous bruises have increased my fear of riding motor in big city. The recent news, Biker recounts becoming unwitting casualty of Federal Highway U-turn accident and "doom and gloom in Bike lanes". I'm living in a big city, Kuala Lumpur, a highly urbanized city. For those who have never ridden a motor in a big city, please stop assuming the safety of riding motor in Kuala Lumpur, the risk of riding is there and it is high. The death rate for riders is higher than for driver, motorcyclist are about 26 times more like to die in a crash than someone riding in a passenger car and are 5 times as likely to be injured. Per mile traveled in 1998, motorcyclist were about 16 times more like than passenger car accupants to die and about 3 times as likely to be injured, in a motor vehicle crash. I do not mind to ride a motor in a rural place but not, at least, in Kuala Lumpur, alone riding on a busy street in traffic.

As a student, its best to prepare mentally and financially to face higher prices of goods and services when subsidies are gradually cut. Food and drinks costs have increased rapidly. 50 sen increase in food i usually have in hawker centers and food courts around my place. Therefore i decided to cook at home and occasionally eating out to save more. Also, another series of hikes is announced for the groceries such sugar, beverage, evaporated milk and so forth. The slogan always mentioned by our Prime Minister " people first" seems to be uselesst, what i see now is that the people's interest do not come first under the current government, however the people's subsidies get cut first instead.
